An Open Letter To The Honorable President Barrack Obama
The Honorable President Obama:
We are the Asian-American citizens or permanent residents living in Southern California with deep love for the United States-a great country of freedom and justice.We would like to express our opinions on the Diao Yu Tai Islands to you. Your kind consideration will be much appreciated.
Diao Yu Tai is the official name of the islands extended from the Taipei Mountain Range to the East Sea.These islands are about 90 miles northeast of Taipei under the administration of I-Lan County of Taiwan. Just as the famous columnist of the New York Times Mr. Nicholas Kristof said on October 4, 2010:"Since ancient time, this area has belonged to China."There is a 5,000-foot deep sea trench between Okinawa and Diao Yu Tai,which is the natural water-shed.Historically, geologically and legally Diao Yu Tai is a part of Taiwan.In 1972, the US transferred the jurisdiction to Japan and left the sovereignty undecided. Today, under the protection of the US-Japan Mutual Defense Treaty, the right-wing Japanese radical politicians attempt to peculate the sovereignty of the islands by an absurd farce of purchasing Islands,causing the tangles among Taiwan, Japan and Mainland China. Taiwan has been a faithful friend of US for decades. We hope the US would return the jurisdiction to Taiwan under the principle of justice. This is the best way to coincide with the strategic interest of the US as well as maintain the peace and stability of the West Pacific.
Japan launched the sneaky Pearl Harbor Attack on December 7,1941. On August 15, 1945 Japan surrendered after accepting the terms of Cairo Declaration(1943) and Potsdam Declaration (1945).According to the terms, Japan&squots sovereignty after the War should be limited to the Islands of Honshu, kkaido,Kyushu,Shikok and the minor islands decided by the Allies. The terms also include that Japan must be expelled from the Pacific islands occupied after 1914.In recent years the Japanese militarism has been recovering by using the US-Japan Mutual Defense Treaty to provoke the neighboring countries such as Russia, South Korea, Taiwan and Mainland China. Since 2005, Japan has unilaterally declared that 4,360,000 square kilometers of the Pacific are the continental shelf of Japan. The rightists are also spreading the anti-American complex by worshipping the war criminals at the Martyrs Shrine and memorializing the Atomic Bomb Explosion Day .If the US ignores to restrain the expansion of the Japanese militarism, such tendency will surely endanger the security of the Asian Pacific countries including the US. We sincerely hope our beloved President would make a wise decision on this issue to return the jurisdiction of Diao Yu Tai Islands to Taiwan.
